The Directorate General of Maritime Administration, in coordination with the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Paradip Port Authority, successfully averted a major incident at sea involving the Belize-flagged tanker M.T. Sea Gull 9 (IMO No.: 9175092), approximately 37 nautical miles East-South-East of Paradip, Odisha.

The vessel was carrying about 9,000 MT of palm oil and 23 crew.

On 27 Sep 2026 the vessel reported main engine failure and ballast tank flooding, which caused a 10° tilt of the vessel.

On receiving the distress report, the Directorate’s Marine Casualty and Emergency Response Branch coordinated the multi-agency response.

This covered damage control, stabilisation, aerial pollution surveillance and the vessel’s safe entry into port.

M.T. Sea Gull 9 arrived at Paradip Port on 28 Sep 2026 with the Harbour Master onboard, assisted by tug Dolphin No. 25.

A minor palm-oil sheen was observed near the vessel and has since dissipated naturally.

The Directorate remains committed to safety of life at sea and protection of the marine environment.
