Greek shipping holds 17% of world fleet and 61% of EU-controlled tonnage

Greek-owned fleet reaches $200bn ahead of Posidonia
Greek shipowners enter Posidonia with vessels valued at about $200bn on the water, according to Clarksons Research data. Greek shipping companies own 427m dwt and 254m GT of tonnage, alongside more than $75bn of newbuilding orders.
The figures underline the country’s weight in bulkers, tankers and gas carriers.
Greek companies control 17% of the world fleet in dwt terms and more than a fifth of all tankers, bulkers and LNG carriers.
The Union of Greek Shipowners said in its 2025–2026 annual report that Greece remains the world’s leading shipping nation, with nearly 5,800 vessels and more than 19% of global tonnage. Greek shipping also accounts for 61% of the EU-controlled merchant fleet, according to the UGS. The sector remains a major part of Greece’s economy.
The UGS said shipping directly and indirectly accounts for 7% to 8% of Greek GDP and supports about 200,000 jobs.
