The new sailing cargo ship SV JUREN AE, which was officially named in a ceremony in Geoje City, South Korea last Thursday (9 May), will soon be setting sail for the Marshall Islands to take on her role as flagship for inter-island trade in the Micronesian area.

The vessel has been developed by the project partners Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, and SDC Ship Design & Consult GmbH.

The naming ceremony in South Korea was attended by the project partners and a delegation from the Marshallese Government.

Raffael Held of GIZ GmbH told Bunkerspot that the vessel’s main source of propulsion is an Indosail Sailing Rig, and ‘a Doosan main engine ensures for safe and reliable propulsion if there is no wind’. ‘The expectation is 80% fuel savings for the common trade in the Rep. of the Marshall Islands’ area in average and regular Marshallese conditions,’ said Held, adding that the project partners are looking to ‘obtain lots of data in the context of a scientific study over the course of one year to prepare further up-scaling of this new type of Pacific Island supply vessel’.
